Dhaka University Film Society also known as DUFS is a voluntary students’ organization of the University of Dhaka in Bangladesh. It is one of the pioneers of film society movement in Bangladesh. DUFS’s motto is “Better Films, Better Viewers”.
DUFS is the only such organisation at University of Dhaka and affiliated with the Dhaka University Central Student’s Union (DUCSU). It is registered under the Film Societies Act and a member of Federation of Film Societies, Bangladesh (FFSB). DUFS is also registered with the Bangladesh Film Censor Board.
DUFS was originally established in 1962 and faced some ups and downs on its way. DUFS was re-established in 1991 with a new look, broader view and complex structure. Since then and still, the organisation’s main mission is to create viewers of good movies with good taste.
As a part of its mission, DUFS have successfully organised many film oriented programmes such as – film festivals, appreciation courses, seminars, workshops, rallies, retrospectives and so on. World Film Manifestation Programme (WFMP) is one of its successful programmes with over 400 movie screenings. Some of the major regular festivals of DUFS are ‘Amaar Bhasar Cholocchitro’, ‘International Inter University Short Film Festival’ and ‘Film For Fresher’s’.
The regular festivals are ‘Amar Bhasar Cholocchitro’, ‘International Inter-University Short Film Festival’ (IIUSFF), ‘Film For Fresher’s’. Amar Bhasar Cholocchitro is a regular film festival organised by DUFS in February every year to celebrate the International Mother Language Day, February 21, and as a tribute to the martyrs of the 1952 Language Movement. The other regular festival International Inter-University Short Film Festival is not only a festival which gives viewers the opportunity to enjoy short films, it is also a great platform for young independent filmmakers to promote and screen their films. Filmmakers can submit their films in two categories – competition and panorama.
Apart from these regular programme ,DUFS regularly organizes two or three-day-long ‘Film For Fresher’s’ for the newly admitted students every year in a bid to introduce them to the organisation and its motto – ‘Better Film Better Viewers’. They are going to arrange International Inter-University Short Film Festival in the last portion of December this year. Last year hundreds of short films from more than 25 universities around the world were submitted.
