People with disabilities need care

People with disabilities
need care

About 10 per cent of the total population of Bangladesh are victims of physical and mental disability somehow or other. The persons with disabilities are not burden on their families, society or the state if they are groomed up as productive force. The development of the country cannot be expected ignoring the persons suffering from disability. The disabled people will have to be brought under the mainstream population. Boys or girls with disabilities taking part in examinations make newspaper headlines at times. Those who have no hands are seen writing with the help of legs. Even some are seen writing answer scripts putting pens within their mouths. This amply shows that there is no dearth of efforts on the part of the disabled people to overcome their disabilities.

Through proper education and rigorous training the people with disabilities can be made skilled productive force. They can earn for themselves, for their families and can also contribute to the development of the country. They can prove that they are no more dependent on others. In this way, they can live with dignity and not as objects of pity.  In this age of globalization, Information Technology can do a lot for the people with disabilities. Armed with technological expertise, the disabled ones can be self-reliant, support their families and even can contribute to employment generation for others.

The people with disabilities need proper infrastructural support. Government can provide it, NGOs of the country can also come forward in the aid of the disabled ones. The allocation for the disabled people is not enough. This should be increased substantially to implement various programmes. All the financial institutions may come forward to fulfill their Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) to ensure the basic needs of the disabled people like education and health as well as prioritise disabled students for scholarships. Joint efforts of government and the society can bring the people with disabilities into the mainstream. Proper medical care, financial, familial, social and psychological support can rejuvenate the dampening spirit of a disabled person.
