JU protesters hold rally

The agitating teachers and students of Jahangirnagar University (JU) held a rally on the campus yesterday demanding the removal of the Vice- Chancellor Prof Farzana Islam over graft allegation in mega development project. As part of their pre announced programme, over 60 teachers and students under the banner of ‘Jahangirnagar Against Corruption’ gathered at the Murad Chattar around 1 pm and brought out a procession on the campus.

The procession was ended on Battala premises after parading different streets on the campus. Later, a rally was held there. Addressing the rally, speakers condemned the attack on the protesters by the BCL leaders and activists on November 5 and demanded punishment of the accused.

Prof Anwarullah Bhuyan of Philosophy department said, “JU BCL men attacked us on November 5 with the direct influence of the Vice-Chancellor. Corruption of JU VC is gradually lengthening. We want to see the policy of ‘Zero Tolerance’ against the corruption by the government in case of JU”. At the rally, convener of the platform Prof Raihan Rayen announced to publish the documents of corruption of JU Vice-Chancellor on December 10.

Conducted by Secretary of JU Socialist Student Front Shudipta Dey, leader of Shadharan Chhatra Adhikar Parishad Shakil Uzzaman addressed the rally, among others. Meanwhile, a group of students staged sit-in programme in front of JU Central Library to protest against alleged authority’s decision in decreasing the library time.

Library authority issued a release of rescheduling the library time 8.30 am to 8.30 pm today that was 7.30 am to 10 pm earlier. When contacted to the acting teacher of JU Library Prof Hanif Ali said, “I have informed about this. I will try to make a solution on Sunday after discussing with the students”.
