SC seeks
Khaleda’s
health report

Appellate Division (AD) of the Supreme Court (SC) yesterday sought medical reports on BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia’s health condition while hearing her bail petition in the Zia Charitable Trust Corruption Case. It also asked Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University to submit Khaleda’s health reports before it by December 5.

The apex court also fixed December 5 for delivering its order on the bail petition filed by the BNP chief in the corruption case in which she was given imprisonment by a trial court.

A six-member bench of the AD headed by Chief Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain passed the order after holding a hearing on the Zia Charitable Trust graft case.

Senior lawyer Joynul Abedin appeared for the three-time prime minister

while Attorney General Mahbubey Alam represented the state and Advocate Khurshid Alam Khan stood for the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).

Later, AG Mahbubey Alam said, “The AD ordered the medical board to submit all the documents on the medical treatment of Khaleda Zia to the court on December 5.”

Khaleda had moved the top court on November 14 challenging a High Court (HC) order that had turned down her bail petition in the corruption case.

The HC bench of Justice Farid Ahmed and Justice ASM Abdul Mobin on September 11 rejected Khaleda’s bail petition in the case, in which she is serving a 10-year sentence. Earlier, her bail petitions were turned down twice on July 31 and September 3. On August 8, 2011, the ACC filed the Zia Charitable Trust case with the Tejgaon police against four people, including Khaleda.

They were accused of abusing power in raising funds for the trust from unknown sources.
