Int’l workshop on disaster management begins

A three-day workshop on “Towards Disaster Resilience: Deeper Understanding of Natural Hazards (UND)” began on Monday at Dhaka University (DU). The department of disaster science and management of DU organised the workshop at CARS auditorium on the campus. DU Vice-chancellor (VC) Prof Dr Md Akhtaruzzaman inaugurated it while local coordinator of workshop and dean of the faculty of earth and environmental sciences of DU Prof Dr ASM Maksud Kamal presided over the inaugural function. Prof Dr Tso Ren Wu of National Central University, Taiwan and Prof Dr Simon C Lin of Academia Sinica of Taiwan addressed it. Assistant Professor of the Department of Disaster Science and Management Md Marufur Rahman conducted the inaugural session. While addressing, DU VC Prof Dr Md Akhtaruzzaman urged political and academic leaders of Asia to work together to reduce risk of all sorts of natural disasters.
Bangladesh is highly vulnerable to natural hazards due to its geographical location, he also mentioned. Some others Asian countries also suffer from the same hazard, he pointed out. The VC stressed the need for undertaking joint collaborative research on disaster management among the academic institutions of Asia to resolve these burning problems. It may be mentioned that academicians and researchers from the eight countries of Asia, including Bangladesh, Thailand, Malaysia, Myanmar, Indonesia and Taiwan, are participating in the workshop.
29th KU day observed in Khulna

The 29th Khulna University (KU) day was observed on Monday amidst much enthusiasm and festivity. Vice-chancellor (VC) of KU Professor Dr Fayquzzaman formally inaugurated the day’s programme this morning by releasing balloons and pigeons at Shaheed Hadi Chattar (Square) . VC also led a colourful procession, largely attended by teachers , students, officials and employees of the university that paraded different parts of the campus. To mark the day, a cake was cut by VC at Muktomoncha of Khulna University campus where , Registrar , Treasurer, Deans, Provosts, Proctors and Student Affair Director were also present. Academic fair, discussion meetings, cultural events and candlelight are the highlights of the days programme. In observance of the KU day, the whole campus including administrative, senate and cafeteria buildings, dormitories, roads and main gate were colourfully decorated. Khulna University started its academic activities formally on November 25, 1991 with four disciplines under two schools with only 80 students and 30 teachers with Prof Dr Golam Rahman as it’s the founder Vice-chancellor (VC), university sources said. At present, it runs 29 different disciplines under eight schools and two institutes with over 7,000 students and 500 teachers, the sources added.
