25 mounds of ‘jatka’ seized, six jailed

Barishal river police with the help of fisheries department in separate drives seized 25 mounds of ‘jatka’ (hilsa fry less than 10 inches in length) and detained six fishermen on Friday for netting ‘jatka’ violating the imposed restriction. The detained fishermen were-- Md Bashir, 40, Md Sharif, 26, Md Shahin, 32, Md Nagor Howlader, 48, Ripon Patowary, 25 and Abu Taher, 26. Md Kafiluddin, superintendent of Barishal district river police, said the accused were netting hilsa in different points of Kirtankhola River and police detained them with 25 mounds of ‘jatka’.

Dr Bimal Chandra Das, district fishery officer (hilsa), said the detained fishermen were produced before the mobile court operated by Russell Hossain, executive magistrate of district administration, yesterday morning.  The court awarded each of the detained fishermen to one month imprisonment for netting ‘jatka’ defying the ban. Later, the seized ‘jatka’ were distributed to different orphanages of the city by the court, he added.
