5 Indians jailed in gold smuggling case

A court on Sunday sentenced five Indian nationals to three years rigorous imprisonment in a gold smuggling case that was filed in 2014.
The convicts are - Bijoy Kumar, Kamal, Ram Kumar Golabmal, Rohit Ashok and Rakesh Laxman, inhabitants of from Nagpur and Ahmedabad.
The court also fined them Tk 10,000 each. In default, to suffer one month more imprisonment.
According to prosecution, acting on a  tip-off, a team of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) in a drive intercepted a Jessore-bound BRTC bus and arrested five Indian citizens along with 36 gold
bars, weighing 4 kg and worth Tk 2.2 crore, from Pulerhat Akij pump area on Jessore-Benapole road on 22 June 2014. Later, Habildar Azizul Haque of 26-BGB battalion filed a case in this
connection.
Sub-inspector Shahinur Rahman, also investigation officer of the case, submitted the charge-sheet accusing five of them. During the trial, the accused confessed their crime.
After examining all the records and witnesses, Additional District and Sessions Judge Almas Hossain Mrida passed the order.
