A court here yesterday sent 60 leaders and activists of BNP and Bangladesh Jamaat E Islami and Islami Chhatra Shibir to jail after rejecting their bail prayers. Earlier they were arrested from different areas of Barisal and Pirojpur districts in last 24 hours. Abu Syed, assistant commissioner of Barisal metropolitan police and spokesman of BMP, said Advocate Ali Haidar Babul, former joint secretary of city BNP was arrested from Fakir Bari road area on Sunday night. He was accused in three violence cases. Police arrested 15 more BNP and Jammat-Shibir activists from different parts of the city Sunday night. Police produced them before the court and the court ordered them to send jail rejecting their bail prayers.
On the other hand Shakhawat Hossain, Barisal Kotwali police station officer in charge, said Advocate Salahuddin Masum, law affairs secretary of Jammat E Islami Barisal city unit and councilor of ward-14 of Barisal City Corporation, was arrested from Zilla School Crossing on Sunday noon.
Advocate Masum was arrested as accused in 3 cases of sabotage including arson attack on law chamber of district AL secretary and lawmaker Advocate Talukdar Md. Yunus.
Besides Bazlur Rahman Bachchu, city vice president of Jamaat Islami arrested from his resident in Alekanda area of the city on Sunday late afternoon as accused in different cases of participating and planning sabotage, police sources said.
The arrested leaders would be produced before the court, Abu Sayed, assistant commissioner of Barisal Metropolitan Police added.
BNP and Jammat leaders claimed that police raided the houses of their leaders and activists Sunday night. Facing the harassment of the police they were passing night outside their houses.
