Withdraw comment on tribunal verdict

The Sector Commanders' Forum of the Liberation War has asked Amnesty International to withdraw its comment on the verdict of the International Crimes Tribunal. Harun Habib, secretary general of the Sector Commanders’ Forum, said at a press conference at the National Press Club in the city yesterday (Friday) that the human rights organisation has violated the “sovereignty of the judiciary” of independent Bangladesh. Amnesty International, a global body committed to defending those denied justice or freedom, posted on its website on October 27: “Death penalty by the war crimes tribunal extremely regrettable”. Habib demanded withdrawal of the comment "on a sub-judice matter”, saying it is clear interference in the judicial process of a sovereign nation. In a letter to Amnesty’s secretary general, Salil Shetty, the Forum alleged that Amnesty was “trying to defend the accused and not the victims of their atrocities”.
