As part of ongoing 10-day drama festival titled ‘Bangla Natya Utsab’, Loko Natyadal (Banani) will stage its much-acclaimed play ‘Konjush’, an adaptation of the Molière satire ‘The Miser’, today at the Nilima Ibrahim Auditorium of Bangladesh Mahila Samiti in the capital’s Baily Road area.
‘Konjush’ belongs to the ‘Comedy of Morals’ genre, which is designed to address vices such as hypocrisy, pride, greed, social pretensions and nepotism. The play is adapted by Tariq Anam Khan and directed by Kamrun Nur Chowdhury. Tariq Anam Khan’s adaptation of the play presents a ‘Dhakaiyya’ (a native of Old Dhaka) protagonist - a rich old man named Haider Ali. Through Haider Ali’s story, ‘Konjush’ attacks the selfish and opportunistic tendencies of the elite.
The cast of the play includes Khairul Alam, Kamrun Nur Chowdhury, Shamshad Begum, Mostofa Anwar Swopon, Zahidur Rahman, Zahid Chowdhury, Abdullah Al Harun, Monika Biswas and others. Celebrating the completion of Mahakal Natya Sampraday’s three-decade journey in the theatre world, the troupe has organised the festival featuring Bangla dramas from Bangladesh and three other Bangla-speaking states of neighbouring India.
