Case proceedings delayed

The case proceedings over blogger Ananta Bijoy Das murder are being delayed as the document of the case is yet to reach the Metropolitan Magistrate Court from Sylhet Metropolitan Sessions Judge’s Court due to submission a miss case by an accused. Hearing of the case was already deferred two times earlier for this reason. Last hearing of the case was held at Metropolitan Magistrate’s Court-2 on November 4 (Wednesday). Criminal Investigation Department inspector Arman Ali sought 15 days’ remand for four accused including Farabi Shafiur Rahman and the court fixed November 19 next hearing. Police have so far arrested nine people for their suspected involvement in the killing. The arrestees are Idris Ali, Mannan Rahi, Mohaimin Noman, Abul Khayer, Sadek Ali Metu, Towhidur Rahman, Ashikul Mollik, Ariful Haque and Jakirul Haque. All arrestees were placed on remand over the killing of the blogger. Among them, Mannan Rahi made a confessional statement under section 164 before magistrate.  But Mannan’s father made a claim in a recent press conference denying his son’s involvement in the blogger killing. Meanwhile, the court granted bail to local photojournalist Idris Ali, who was arrested in the case earlier.  
On October last 19, Judge of Sylhet Metropolitan Magistrate’s Court Anwarul Haque deferred the hearing as documents of the case had not reached the court. Earlier on October 4, the case was deferred for the same reason. In the last week of September, the case was transferred to Metropolitan Sessions Judge’s Court from Metropolitan Magistrate’s Court-2 as a miss case was filed by an accused named Mohimen Noman to the Metropolitan Session Judge’s Court. On September 3, the court recorded the confessional statement of Mannan Rahi, one of accused in the blogger Ananta killing case.
Metropolitan Magistrate Court-3 Judge Anwarul Karim recorded the statement  under Section 164 where Mannan Rahi confessed to his involvement in the killing of Ananta.
Earlier on August 28, members of Criminal Investigation Department (CID) arrested Rahi and his brother Mohaimin Noman  from Faljur village in Kanaighat upazila.
On the same day, they were put on a seven-day remand in connection with the blogger killing. At the same time, police arrested Abul Khayer from the SUST campus in connection with the blogger killing.
Later, he was produced before the local court which placed him on a seven-day remand.
On September 9, Abul Khayer was placed on a seven-day fresh remand. Judge Sahedul Karim of Sylhet Metropolitan Magistrate’s Court-1 passed the order when CID Inspector Arman Ali produced him before his court seeking a 15-day remand. On September 19, the court placed the five accused on a seven-day remand over their alleged involvement in the murder of blogger Ananta.

The five accused were Sadek Ali Metu, Towhidur Rahman, Ashikul Mollik, Ariful Haque and Jakirul Haque. On May 12, blogger Ananta Bijoy Das, also an activist of Sylhet Ganajagaran Manch, was hacked to death by a group of assailants at Subidbazar in the city.
