ACC files 2 petitions

The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) yesterday filed two separate petitions before the lower court on the arrest of controversial contactor  SM Golam Kibria Shamim and suspended Juba League leader Khaled Mahmud Bhuiyan to court. Both Shamim and Bhuiyan have been arrested in connection with graft cases. Accepting the petitions, acting Dhaka metropolitan sessions judge Al Mamun scheduled a hearing on the petitions in the presence of the accused on October 27.

The same court also fixed November 18 and 19 as the dates for submitting the investigation reports of the cases filed against Bhuiyan and Shamim, respectively. The anti-corruption watchdog filed two separate cases against Shamim and his mother Ayesha Akhter, as well as against Bhuiyan, on October 21 for their alleged involvement in the accumulation of illegal wealth. ACC deputy director M Salauddin filed a case against GK Shamim and his mother for amassing nearly Tk. 297.09 crore illegally.

The other case was filed by ACC deputy director Jahangir Alam against Bhuiyan for illegally accumulating Tk. 5.58 crore.

On September 20, the Juba League expelled Bhuiyan, then its Dhaka South organising secretary, for breaching the organisation’s discipline and his involvement in anti-social activities.

Bhuiyan had already been arrested for running a casino.

The same day, members of the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) arrested 50-year-old Shamim, a top government-listed contractor and known Juba League leader, in connection with extortion and tender manipulation.
