7 to die for killing woman after rape in Joypurhat

A tribunal here on Tuesday convicted seven people and sentenced them to death for killing a woman after rape in Akkelpur upazila in 2016.
The condemned convicts are Sohel Talukdar, Afzal Hossain, Rahin, Ferdous Ali, Mujibur Rahman, Ruhul Amin and Azizar Rahman of Akkelpur upazila.
The tribunal fined Sohel and Ferdous Tk 5 lakh each while the other convicts Tk 1 lakh each.
According to the prosecution, the convicts picked up Aroti Rani, wife of Ujjal Mahant, a resident of a Deura shelter centre in the upazila, and violated her in turns taking her to a remote place on October 8, 2016.
Later, they fled the scene after leaving her in critical condition. She died on way to a local hospital.
On October 10, 2016, victim’s husband filed a case with Akkelpur Police Station.
After examining the records and witnesses Joypurhat Women and Child Repression Prevention Tribunal judge Dr ABM Mahmudul Haque handed down the verdict.
Road crashes kill 3 in 2 dists

Three people were killed in road accidents in Kushtia and Jashore yesterday.
Our Jashore correspondent reports: A schoolboy was killed as a truck hit him in Natun Khaertola area in the town yesterday morning.
The deceased was identified as Maidul Islam Lion, 13, son of Mahbubur Rahman, hailed from Power House Para in the municipality. He was a class-seven-student at Jashore Daud Pablic School.
Police said, a Jhenidah-bound Truck hit Maidul Islam Lion around 7.30 am in front of regional agricultural research centre on Jashore-Jhenaidah Highway when he was going to school, leaving the schoolboy dead on the spot. The body was sent to Jashore 250-bed General Hospital morgue for autopsy.
Police seized the truck but its driver and helper fled from the spot.
A case was filed with Jashore Model Thana Thana in this connection.
A UNB report adds: In Kushtia, two motorcyclists were killed and another was injured as the motorbike they were riding fell into a pond at Kuthipara intersection in Khokshaupazila here on Monday night.
The deceased were identified as Zia, 40, son of Shamsuddin of Kallyanpur village in Kumarkhali upazila and Hasan, 30, of Majhgram of the upazila.
Witnesses said the accident took place when they were going to Pangsha upazila in Rajbari district around 11:30 pm to see circus, leaving biker Zia dead on the spot.
Members of fire service retrieved Hasan’s body from the pond while injured Shafi Sardar was admitted to a local hospital.
ABM Mehedi Masud, officer-in-charge of Khoksha Police Station, said police recovered the bodies and sent those to Kushtia General Hospital morgue.
