2 under-age girls saved from marriage on same night

UNB, Sirajganj

Assistant Commissioner (Land) and Executive Magistrate Md Anisur Rahman saved two teenage girls from child marriage on the same night.

Mobile court sources said that acting on a tip-off, members of the law enforcing agencies went to the village Fulbari of Sadar Upazila where arrangement for marriage was going on between college student Kaniz Fatema, 16, daughter of A Majid of village Saratoil under Kalihati Upazila of Tangail and Moniruzzaman, 19, son of Latu Mia of the same village.

The mobile court fined the father of the bridegroom Tk 10,000. At the same time, bond was taken from the fathers of the bridegroom and the bride that their wards would not be married off before they were of legal age for marriage.

In another incident, arrangement was going on for the marriage of a seventh grader Tania Sultana, 13, daughter of Abdur Razzak of the same village with Osman Gani, 22, son of Golam Hossain of the same village. The mobile court fined the bride’s father Tk 5000. Besides, bond was also taken from the father of the bride that the bride would not be married off till she turned 18.

 Fahima Al Ashraf, Programme Officer of Women Affairs Directorate, Soidabad Union Assistant Land Officer Moyeen Uddin and Ansar Battalion members were present at this time.

Old man commits suicide out of frustration in Jashore

UNB, Jashore

An old man committed suicide by hanging himself after being frustrated for being evicted from government khas land at Monirampur here.

Abdul Ahad Morol, 65, committed suicide by hanging himself at a grocery shop. His relatives found the body tied with a towel in a mango tree by the side of his house.

It is presumed that he hanged himself after offering fazr prayers as a prayer-cap was found on the head of the body.

Toriqul Islam, son of the old man, filed a UD case with Monirampur police station in this connection. Abdul Ahad Morol, son of late Abul Kashem Morol of village Batbila of the upazila, had a grocery shop in the khas land at local Durbadanga bazaar.

Toriqul Islam, the son of the deceased said that the government has evicted 10-25 shops on the khas land of the bazaar two weeks back. “Of them we had a shop there. My father used to sell grocery items there for a long time with which our family expenses including study cost of our three brothers was being maintained.”

“After the demolition of the shop my father became mentally upset. We tried to console him in many ways,” he added.

Shomen Biswas, SI of Monirampur police station, said it is presumed primarily that the old man Abdul Ahad Morol committed suicide due to financial hardship. After recovery, the body has been sent to morgue.

JU Alumni Assoc get-together held in Bogura

Jahangirnagar University Alumni Association held a get-together programme at Bogura Rural Deveopment Academy auditorium in Sherpur upazila of Bogura on Friday.

President of Jahangirnagar University Alumni Association Ex Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr Sharif Enamul Kabir attended the programme as chief guest.

The programme was inaugurated by the Vice-Chancellor of Mawlana Bhashani Science and Technology University Professor Dr Mohammad Alauddin.

Tahiat Hossain, project director (additional secretary) development project of post graduate colleges of                       education ministry, ex register of Jahangirnagar University, also general secretary of the association Abu Bakar Siddique, senate member of the university, also first joint secretary of the university Sheikh Monowar Hossain, Deb Dulal,               secretary of the district unit were also present.

Over 100 alumni joined the event. Principal of Dhunat Government College TIM Nurunnabi Tarique presented welcome speech while president of the association of the district unit Golam Mostafa Chowdhury was in the chair.
