Detained Indian fishermen sent to jail in Bagerhat

A court here on Wednesday sent 15 Indian fishermen detained by Bangladesh Navy to jail on charges of illegal fishing after intruding into Bangladesh maritime territory.
The detainees are Babul Sarkar, 42, Kartik Das, 45, Sonaram Das, 51, Rajesh Das, 33, Bholanath Das, 60, Basudev Das, 30, Pilton Das, 23, Uttam Das, 35, Mintu Das, 25, Bimol Das, 48, Kiron Das, 64, Surjo Das, 25, Nepal Das, 29, Uttam Das, 26 and Ananda Das, 50. According to police, they all hail from different villages in Kakdwip thana of West Bengal’s South 24 Parganas district.
After the detainees were produced at the Judicial Magistrate Court, the judge sent them to the district jail.
Iqbal Bahar Chowdhury, officer-in-charge of Mongla police station said BNS Nishan seized a fishing trawler called Ma Laxmi from the Fair Buoy area of the Bay of Bengal on Monday evening during a routine patrol.
The 15 Indian fishermen were caught fishing 90 nautical miles from the Mongla Port.
Abul Manzur, Petty Officer of Bangladesh Navy, filed a case against the Indian fishermen.
The detained fishermen were transferred to the Mongla police station on Tuesday evening, the OC added.
Teacher jailed for rape attempt

A mobile court here on Wednesday sentenced a teacher to one year’s imprisonment for reportedly trying to rape a Class-VI girl in Keshabpur upazila.
The convict is Abdus Sattar, a teacher of mosque-based institute called Maktab of Sanyasgachha in the upazila.
Sattar kept the girl after allowing other students to go in the morning. Then he tried to rape the girl confining her to a room. Hearing her screams, locals rescued the girl and caught the teacher.
Later, the mobile court, led by Executive Magistrate Mizanur Rahman, jailed him for one year.
Gaibandha Puratan Bazar fish sale centre declared formalin free

Puratan Bazaar of the district town was declared as formalin free fish sale centre on Wednesday at the initiative of Sadar upazila administration, upazila fisheries office and Bazar committee.
A function in this regard was held at the office of Bazar committee of the town here yesterday afternoon.
Sadar upazila chairman Shah Sarwar Kabir attended the function and addressed it as the chief guest and officer in charge of Sadar Thana Khan M. Shahriar was present at the event as the special guest.
Presided over by UNO Uttam Kumar Roy the function was also addressed among others by senior Sadar upazila fisheries officer Sanjoy Banerjee, president of Bazar committee Sekendar Ali and fish trader Krishna Kumar Dash. After elaborate discussion, upazila chairman Shah Sarwar Kabir declared the Bazar as formalin free fish sale centre.
A number of peoples including fisheries officials, fish traders, consumers and media men were present on the occasion. Senior upazila fisheries officer Sanjoy Banerjee said earlier, they conducted the drives at the Bazar several times but no formalin mixed fishes were found there.
Considering it, they declared the Bazar as formalin free fish sale centre.
Rice distributed among flood affected people in Lalpur

Lalpur Upazila administration distributed rice among 150 flood affected families in Ishwardi union under the Upazila of the district yesterday.
A simple function was held at Ishwardi union Parishad on the occasion. Upazila Nirbahi Officer Ummul Banin Duti, Upazila AL general secretary Ishahak Ali, PIO Abdur Razzak and Ishwardi Union Parishad chairman Aminul islam Joy were present in the function.
Each family were given 15 kilograms of rice as relief. It is mentioned increasing water in the River Padma caused sudden flood in north-western region in the country.
