Young Tigers seal second straight win against NZ

In the rescheduled 2nd youth ODI, Bangladesh U19 sneaked past their counterparts New Zealand U19 by four wickets at the Burt Sutcliffe Oval in Lincoln yesterday. With this win the Youth Tigers lead the 5-match ODI series 2-0. If the Akbar Ali led side wins another encounter from the remaining three matches, it will be the first time ever for any Bangladedshi side to win a series in New Zealand.

Opting to bat, New Zealand U19 were off to a formidable start until Mrittunjoy Chowdhury dismissed Kiwi skipper Ollie White in the 13th over. When runs were hard to come by after Bangladedshi bowlers kept maintaining tight spells throughout the innings, not allowing batsmen to free their arms, Kiwi opener Thomas Zohrab smashed a magnificent ton to help New Zealand U19 post a respectable 242 after 50 overs.

Zohrab was only the standout performer for the host after he scored 112 off 142 balls. Among the bowlers used by Akbar Ali, Mrittunjoy Chowdhury baaged two wickets while Shamim Hossain and Rakibul Hasan bowled economical spells with one scalp each.

In reply, while Parvez Hossain struggled at one end and fell cheaply after scoring only 6, Tanzid Hasan provided a blazing start at the other end. His 63-ball 65 and also an important 95-run stand for the second wicket placed the visiting side in a comfortable position after 21 overs.

The youth Tigers didn't let themselves down after Tanjid's departure Mahmudul Hasan Joy and Towhid Hridoy steadied the innings with another 76-run partnership for the 3rd wicket. Hridoy left the crease before being scored a well-made 40, the Youth Tigers were on brink of securing another win over the hosts.

Considering the innings played by Mahmudul Hossain Joy, it was really unfortunate for him as he couldn't finish the game staying at the crease after falling just one run short of scoring a century.

With just 8 runs required, Shamim and Shahadat Hossain sealed the much needed victory with 6 wickets and 21 balls to spare.
