Salman F Rahman, adviser to the Prime Minister for private industry and investment, opened the training camp for the coming World Cup Roller Skating Championship 2019 yesterday. In an opening ceremony at the Sheikh Russel Roller Skating Complex, adjacent to the Bangabandhu National Stadium, Rahman opened the camp after placing wreath at the foot of the mural of Sheikh Russel, the youngest son of the Father of the Nation, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.
Rahman said he was delighted to know that Bangladesh organised the fourth edition of the World Cup in 2017 as individual hosts and was happy to know that Bangladesh had clinched the fourth place. “Really, it is very much appreciated that Bangladesh organised the World Cup of a sports event. I think it is the only federation of Bangladesh to host the World Cup of a sports event, though the Bangladesh Cricket Board had organised the Cricket World Cup as co-host with India,” he added.
Remembering family members of Bangabandhu, including Sheikh Russel, who were assassinated on the 15th of August in 1975, Rahman said: “It is very worthy that the complex has been named after Sheikh Russel. I feel proud that Bangladesh clinched the fourth place in the World Cup Roll Ball Championship. I hope that if the team trains well, it will be able to achieve success in coming competitions and different international stages.”
The general secretary of the Bangladesh Roller Skating Federation demanded from Salman F Rahman a space for roller skating court at the Sheikh Kamal Sports Complex (under construction) at Dhanmondi. Rahman, however, said it would be difficult to find space at the Sheikh Kamal Sports Complex, as the design has already been made.
“I can’t give such a big space at the complex, but I can assure you that I will see what we can do. May be a little corner can be managed for bend skating (part of roll ball skating),” he added.
The camp will begin on September 7 and will run before leaving for India, where the World Cup Roll Ball Championship will take place in November.
President of the Bangladesh Roller Skating Federation (BRSF) and the chief coordinator SDG, Prime Minister's Office, Abu Kalama Azad, and Ahmed Asiful Hasan, general secretary of the BRSF, also addressed the gathering.
