Drug peddler gets life term

A Barishal court yesterday awarded a drug peddler to life term imprisonment with Tk 20,000 fine or to serve more six-month in jail. He was identified as S M Shafiul Alam Tuhin. The same court also awarded another drug peddler Dukhu Biswas to four years and six months imprisonment with Tk10,000 fine or to serve more three months in jail.   Rafikul Islam, senior district and session judge of Barishal handed down the verdict on Tuesday afternoon after examining 11 witnesses and other evidences. Court sources said a police team led by Sub Inspector Mustafizur Rahman of Barishal Airport police station on December 4, 2015 raiding Kashipur Chowmatha area arrested Tuhin and Dukhu and recovered 47 bottles phensidyl from their possession. A case was lodged in this connection with Airport police station on the same day and Sub Inspector Abdul Halim, investigation officer of the case, filed charge sheet against the arrestees on 14 January 2016.

Speaker leaves for Maldives

Speaker Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury yesterday left Dhaka for Maldives to attend the 4th South Asian Speakers' Summit on achieving sustainable goals. The Summit will be held on September 1-2 in Malay, the capital city of Maldives. Senior Secretary of Parliament Secretariat Dr Zafar Ahmed Khan and other high officials saw the Speaker off at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport. The Speaker is expected to return home on September 3, said a parliament secretariat handout.

Man held with 50kg cannabis

Police arrested a ‘drug dealer’ with 50 kilogram cannabis (marijuana) from the city’s Tejgaon industrial area on Tuesday night. A detective team of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) arrested the drug dealer named Md Khokon with the cannabis worth Taka 5 lakh during a drive, Deputy Commissioner of DMP’s Media and Public Relations Division Md. Masudur Rahman, PPM confirmed BSS. After primary inquiry, it was disclosed that the arrestee used to collect marijuana from border areas of Brahmanbaria district and sold different areas in Dhaka city. A case was filed with Tejgaon Police Station in this connection.

4 ‘dacoits’ held with firearms

Detective Branch (DB) of Chattogram District Police on Tuesday arrested four  alleged dacoits with one gun, three country-made light guns, two cartridges and two knives from Salimpur area under Sitakunda upazila of the district. The arrested were identified as Mohammad Bablu alias Pistol Bablu, 35, Abdul Barak alias Pearu ,36, Fahim Islam, 32, and Mohammad Jahangir Alam, 40. Detained Fahim Islam is an accused of 10 cases and Bablu is also an accused of eight cases including snatching, arms and dacoity lodged with various police stations in the city and district, police said. Based-on secrete information that a team of dacoits was being taking preparation to commit robbery in the area, a team of Detective Branch (DB) of district police reached at Salimpur garden house of one Amir Kasru Chowdhury at 4 am suddenly a gang of terrorists opened fire on police team, prompting the law enforcers to fire back in self-defense, triggering the gunfight, he added. Pistol Bablu and Andul Barak, received bullet injury while trying to flee. Later, police recovered single barrel gun, three country-made guns and two bullets from the spot. Police also detained Fahim Islam and Mohammad Jahangir Alam after searching the garden house. Sensing the presence of law enforcers, other dacoits fled from the scene leaving four behind, the source added.
