Senior secretary of the Bridges Division of the road transport and bridges ministry, Khandker Anwarul Islam, is going to be appointed as cabinet secretary soon. “The process of appointing Anwarul Islam as cabinet secretary is ready. Some formalities, however, remain. He will be appointed to the post soon after they are dealt with,” the current cabinet secretary, Mohammad Shafiul Alam, told reporters during a press briefing yesterday.
He was talking with them after holding a meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Purchase. “I hope the notification of appointment of the new cabinet secretary would be issued by the public administration ministry soon,” he said. Khandker Anwarul Islam will be the 22nd cabinet secretary. He is also an official of the BCS admin cadre of the 1983 batch. He will retire on December 15 this year. His wife, Kamrun Nahar, is now working as the secretary of the women and children affairs ministry.
During the briefing, finance minister AHM Mustafa Kamal informed reporters that the government would appoint Mohammad Shafiul Alam as the alternative executive director of the World Bank (WB) soon. Mohammad Shafiul Alam will replace Muhammad Musharraf Hossain.
Khandker Anwarul Islam was promoted to the post of secretary on January 31, 2013 and to the post of senior secretary on July 13, 2017. He joined the Bridges Division as secretary in-charge on November 13, 2011. He also served the Bangladesh Bridge Authority as its executive director. Prior to this posting, he worked in the Cabinet Division as additional secretary.
Anwarul Islam joined the civil service in 1983 and worked in various capacities, both at field and the central levels. He worked as upazila magistrate, upazila nirbahi officer (UNO), additional deputy commissioner and deputy commissioner in-charge in the field administration. He also served as director in the National Sports Council, senior assistant secretary and deputy secretary in the Parliament Secretariat, director in the Department of Relief and Rehabilitation and as secretary in the National Sports Council.
