The proper practice of science and technology is important for a country’s development and it is best if started from an early age.
To encourage interest and enhance knowledge of science among students, Shaheed Bir Uttam Lt Anwar Girls College (SAGC) organised an inter-college science festival for the first time on its premises in the capital from October 15 to 17.
Around 25 schools and colleges participated in SAGC Science Festival 2015, exhibiting a total of 40 projects.
Describing their project, ‘Producing Electricity from Footpath’, Anika Tasnim, Ashraful Haque Nayeem and Tasnim Nowsheen Jeba, students of Adamjee Cantonment College, claimed that their model was able to produce electricity from the footpath.
“The pedestrians of Dhaka city are using the footpath 24 hours a day. The continuous footsteps of the pedestrians create pressure on the footpath. It is possible to make electricity from that pressure,” explained group leader Anika.
The festival also included Math, Physics, Chemistry, Biology and IT Olympiads, Sudoku competition, extempore speech, multimedia presentations, wall magazines, scrap book display, quiz competition and Rubik’s Cube contest.
Ibadullah Rupam of Bangladesh Bank Model School and College won three awards. His wall magazine ‘Power Magnet’ came first, while his ‘DC Temperature with Fan’ project won second place and ‘Water Level Indicator’ secured the third place.
Col Md Zahidur Rahim, principal of the college, said: “Our school organised the science festival with the motto, ‘We bring dream into reality’. Such a festival helps to showcase the brilliance and intelligence of inquisitive young learners. Personally, I hope that the students will be able to play a significant role in science and technology in the future. With their creative thoughts and capability, the world will be a better place.”
“I have been associated with the club directly or indirectly since its inception,” said Md Abdur Rahman, chief moderator of the SAGC Science Club. “This year, for the first time, our science fair was celebrated at national level, made possible by the selfless work and cooperation of some enthusiastic students of class XII. The participants gathered scientific knowledge and developed their aptitude, creativity and leadership qualities through this festival.”
Manabi Sarkar, president of the club, said it started its journey in 2012.
“It has been three years and we have successfully participated in many events hosted by various institutions. But for the first time, we hosted a science festival in our own college and we are very pleased about it,” Sarkar added.
