Govt will make sugar industry profitable, says Amu

Industries Minister Amir Hossain Amu yesterday said the government has taken up a plan to make the country's sugar industry profitable. He also called upon sugar cane farmers not to sell sugar cane to the 'Gur' traders rather to supply clean sugar cane to the mills. "Price of per quintal sugarcane has been increased by Tk 25 to ensure fair price for sugarcane at growers level and steps have already been taken to diversify the products in sugar mills also," the minister said this while inaugurating the sugarcane crushing programme of North Bengal Sugar Mills for the 2015-16 season at Natore. Presided over by AKM Delowar Hossain, chairman of Bangladesh Sugar and Food Industries Corporation, the inaugural function was also attended by former state minister for youth and sports Ahad Ali Sarker.
Meanwhile BSS adds: Work is underway to set up a sugar refinery at the North Bengal Sugar Mills. Besides, a plan is now at the final state to set up distillery, bio-fertilizer and bio-gas plans at North Bengal and Thakurgaon sugar mills, the minister said, adding that sugar mills will be able to make profits after implementation of these plants. He also said work is underway to set up a sugar refinery at the North Bengal Sugar Mills.North Bengal Sugar Mills has targeted to produce 19,560 tonnes of sugar by crushing 2.40 lakh tonnes of sugarcane this season.
