Fish worth Tk 95 lakh poisoned in 2 dists

Criminals poisoned fish worth about Tk 95 lakh in Jhenidah and Jamalpur districts over the past two days.
In Jhendiah, criminals poisoned fish worth Tk3 lakh in a pond at Krishnapur village in Sadar upazila of Jhenidah on Thursday night.
Police and locals said Taizul Islam, a union council member, had been cultivating fish in a pond over the last few years. Locals first spotted fish of different species floating in the ponds on Friday morning.The victim suspects that someone might have poisoned the fish at night to vent anger over arbitrations held time to time. Officer-in-charge of Sadar police station Hasan Hafizur Rahman said they have visited the spot and legal action will be taken after investigation.In Jamalpur, criminals allegedly poisoned fish worth about Tk 80 to Tk 90 lakh in Bamunji Beel (large marshland) in Jamalpur sadar upazila on Wednesday night.
The incident came to light when the dead fishes started floating on the surface of the water.  Sources said during the last two days over two maunds of dead fish worth about Tk 90 lakh came up floating.

Association Limited, a group of local fishermen, was farming fish in the Bamunji Beel under 'Bamunji Beel Jalmahal Project' after taking lease of it. But some criminals used to catch fish in the Beel using current nets. Project Director, Md Abdul Aziz, complained to the District Fisheries Officer to seize the banned current nets, but in vain. After failing to get any help from the fisheries office, the members of the project on their own initiative seized the current nets on October 14, when the criminals were catching fish in the Beel. After the incident, the criminals released poison into the water of the Beel to kill the fish in retaliation.
The members had released Tk5.5 crores worth of fish fries of various varieties, including ruith, shorputi, katla and various types of carps, into the Beel.
  Project Director, fisherman Md Abdul Aziz, said we took lease of the water body, formed on 227 acres of land, after paying revenue worth Tk 2.4 lakhs in 2013. The 84 members of the association have since been benefiting from fish farming there.
Upazila Fisheries Office said he  will collect water of the Beel for examination.
After the incident Abdul Aziz submitted a written complaint against the criminals to the police superintendent for taking legal action. Members of the Association urged the concerned authorities to investigate the matter and take action against the criminals.
