Relief and Disaster Management Minister Mofazzal Hossain Chowdhury Maya said the national polls would not be held prior to schedule whatever might be the conspiracy of BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia abroad to organise midterm elections, reports BSS. “Staying in London, she ( Khaleda Zia) and her fugitive son Tarique Rahman have been hatching conspiracy one after another in their bid to create a smokescreen for midterm polls to destabilise the country. Whatever might be their conspiracy abroad, the polls to the Jatiya Sangsad would not be held prior to 2019,” he said.
Maya, also general secretary of Dhaka City Awami League, said people have trust in the government of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and they are prepared to face any conspiracy of the BNP-Jamaat combine.
The senior Awami League leader said this while speaking as the chief guest at a discussion on “Local government polls on party basis” at the Conference Lounge of the National Press Club the capital.
Pointing to the good side of holding the local government polls on party basis, Maya said, “It’s a historic decision of the government of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
The local government polls were held on neutral basis, but the elections, in reality, were held on party basis in the past. Besides, the media used to declare the polls results on party basis.”
The minister said, “The most significant problem of the local government bodies is related to the postponement of polls for a long time because of filing of cases.
There won’t be such a problem if polls are held on party basis as polls to all the local bodies will be held simultaneously. If the polls could not be held as per schedule, administrators will be appointed.”
Dhaka South unit of Bangabandhu Peshajibi Parishad organised the discussion with its president Shahjalal Patwari in the chair. Dhaka City AL office secretary Shahidul Islam Milon, agriculture affairs secretary Engineer Lutfur Rahman and Bangabandhu Peshajibi Parishad president Zahir Uddin Mabu spoke, among others.
