Arguments continue

A Sylhet court here on Monday continued arguments in the Samiul Alam Rajon murder case in presence of 11 accused on second day yesterday.  Most of the people of the prosecution side gave their arguments on the day. Judge of Sylhet Metropolitan Sessions Judge’s Court Akbor Hossain Mridha heard the second day arguments.  After closure of the arguments, the court also fixed the date for verdict, said Emad Ullah Shahin, lawyer for the plaintiff. Earlier on October 21, the court rerecorded the testimonies of 11 witnesses, out of the 35, who gave their depositions earlier, on a petition by the defense counsel. On October 18, the court rejected the plea submitted by the defense to rerecord the testimonies of the 35 witnesses. On October 20 when court proceedings started for opinions, defense counsel Ali Hayder appealed to the court to rerecord the testimonies of 15 witnesses but the court granted rerecording testimonies of 11.  The lawyer for key accused Kamrul Islam pleaded for rerecording testimonies of the 35 witnesses because he and his client were not present during testimonies of the witnesses which were recorded from October 1 to 18.
Earlier the court also fixed October 25 for closing arguments. On October 15, key accused Kamrul was brought back from KSA. Later on the next day he was produced before a court which sent him to jail and fixed October 18 for the next hearing. On September 7, Rajon murder case had been transferred to the Metropolitan Sessions Judge’s Court from Sylhet Metropolitan Magistrate’s Court.  Earlier police pressed charges against 13 accused, including prime accused Kamrul Islam, for their involvement in the killing.
Later court accepted the charge sheet on August 24. After the charge sheet was accepted, police confiscated wealth of two accused, including Kamrul and Shamim, following a court order.  On August 3, the court also ordered to publish an advertisement in newspapers asking to know whereabouts of the three absconding accused.  In the charge sheet, police showed three accused, including Kamrul, and 10 others, arrested. Kamrul had fled to Saudi Arabia after the murder incident.  He was later caught by some Bangladeshi expatriates there and handed over to Saudi police. Investigation officer Suranjit Talukder submitted the charge sheet to the court of Metropolitan Magistrate Shahedul Karim on August16. Apart from Kamrul, the other accused include Muhit Alam, Ali Haider, Nurul Amin, Dulal Ahmed, Nur Mia, Ayaz Ali, Badal, Firoz Ali, Shamim, Ruhul Amin, Pavel and Asmat Ali.
