The Muslims in the cities like other parts of the country observed the holy Ashura on Saturday marking the 10th day of Muharram with due religious solemnity and in a befitting manner.
In Rajshahi, various religious organisations took out Tazia processions from Tiakapara, Shehab bazaar zero point, Dargapara, Seroil Colony, Upasahar and Bihari colony areas in observance of the day in the city.
Muslims belonged to Shia community expressed their shock and condolence by uttering ‘Hai Hossain, Hai Hossain’ in observance of the day. A discussion meeting was also held at various spots in city highlighting the significance of the day.
A sword fighting exhibition was also held at Upashahar crossing and at Kadirganj area by the Shia youngmen of the city. The sword fighting show drew a huge crowd.
At noon and at night, Shia people distributed cooked food items to the destitute. A fair of specially designed, large loaf was organised at the Sonadighi crossing in observance of the Holy Ashura,
Doa and Milad Mahfil were also held in various mosques of the city in observance of the holy Ashura.

On the 10th of Muharram in the Hijri year 61, Hazrat Imam Hossain (RA), a grandson of Prophet Hazrat Muhammad (PBUH), along with members of his family and followers were brutally killed by the treacherous and heinous soldiers of Yazid at the battle of Karbala on the bank of Euphrates in Iraq.
The members of the Shia community brought out a big procession known as 'Tazia' from Anderkilla area in the port city on Saturday morning.
The participants in the Tazia processions paraded through the different streets chanting "Hai Hussain, Hai Hussain" repenting the most tragic incident.
In the processions, the Shia Muslims expressed profound grief by flagellating themselves on the back with chains and also beating their heads to demonstrate their deep penance for the sufferings of Imam Hussain (RA).
Many Muslim families in the port city also offered Fateha as a mark of respect to the day.
According to Islamic history, bitter disagreement arose among Muslims on the question of succession after the death of Hazrat Ali, the fourth Caliph of Islam. Failure to find a solution due to deceitful act of Yazid to the problem resulted in the Karbala tragedy.

Shia community members arranged distribution of cold Sarbat (sweetened water) in Falpatty area, brought out Sina-jani (injuring himself with knifes at different parts of the body, beating on chest) procession, singing elegies on different parts of the city. At Refugee Colony, Doa mahfil arranged to mark the day by the Imambara committee. Additional police were deployed in the city.
