Argument to continue today
CORRESPONDENT, Sylhet

Argument to continue today

The argument in the Rajon murder case will continue in a Sylhet court today after most of the arguments of plaintiffs were completed yesterday in the presence of 11 accused. Judge Akbor Hossain Mridha of Sylhet Metropolitan Sessions Judge’s Court fixed the date for next argument after the hearing yesterday. Earlier, the court also recorded afresh the testimonies of the 11 witnesses, out of the total 35, following a petition by the defense counsel.
On October 18, the same court rejected a plea submitted by the defense to re-record the testimonies of all 35 witnesses. On October 20, defense counsel Ali Hayder appealed to the court to re-record the testimonies of 15 witnesses, but the court granted the re-recording of 11 testimonies. The lawyer for key accused Kamrul Islam pleaded for the re-recording of testimonies of the 35 witnesses as he and his client were not present during testimonies of the witnesses between October 1 and 18. Earlier the court had also fixed October 25 for the closing arguments. On October 15, key accused in the case, Kamrul was brought back from Saudi Arabia. The next day, he was produced before the court and was ordered to send him to jail. The court also fixed October 18 for the next hearing.
On September 7, Rajon murder was transferred to the Metropolitan Sessions Judge’s Court from Sylhet Metropolitan Magistrate’s Court. Earlier, police pressed charges against 13 people, including Kamrul Islam, for their involvement in the killing. Later, the court accepted the charge sheet on August 24. Investigation Officer Suranjit Talukder submitted the charge sheet to the court of Metropolitan Magistrate Shahedul Karim on August16. Apart from Kamrul, the other accused include Muhit Alam, Ali Haider, Nurul Amin, Dulal Ahmed, Nur Mia, Ayaz Ali, Badal, Firoz Ali, Shamim, Ruhul Amin, Pavel and Asmat Ali.  Names of two detainees Lipi Begum and Ismail Hossain were dropped from the charge sheet as their involvement in the incident was not found.
Following the acceptance of the charge sheet, police confiscated wealth of two accused, Kamrul and Shamim, as per the court order. On august 3, the court also ordered to publish an advertisement in newspapers asking to know whereabouts of the three accused in the case who were absconding.
Kamrul had fled to Saudi Arabia after the incident. He was later caught by some Bangladeshi expatriates and handed over to Saudi police. 13-year-old boy Sheikh Samiul Alam Rajon was tortured to death by a group of persons at Kumargaon on the outskirts of Sylhet city on July 8.
A murder case was filed in this regard by Jalalabad police, in which Rajon’s father later became a plaintiff. Kamrul’s brother Muhit was listed as the prime accused in the case, while Kamrul Islam, 24, their accomplice Ali Haider, 34, and guard Moyna Miah, 45, were charged with murder as well.
A 28-minute video, recorded on a mobile phone camera and posted on facebook, showed teenager Rajon tied to a pole in front of a workshop in the Sultan Ali Market, beside the Dhaka-Sunamganj road. From the video, it seemed there were five to six men who took part in the barbaric torture that caused his death.
