North South University organized a seminar on ‘Air Pollution: Innovation and Challenges’ to celebrate World Environment Day 2019 on 24 June 2019. Director General, Department of Environment, Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Government of Bangladesh, Dr. A.K.M. Rafique Ahammed was present as the Chief Guest. Chairman of Prokriti o Jibon Foundation & Director of Channel I, Mr. Muqeed Majumder Babu, Freedom Fighter Lion Mr.
Benajir Ahmed, Member, Board of Trustees at North South University and Pro Vice-Chancellor (Designate) of NSU, Prof. Dr. Gias U. Ahsan were present as the Special Guests during the seminar. The seminar was presided over by Professor Dr. Atiqul Islam, Vice-Chancellor of NSU.
In his speech Dr. A.K.M. Rafique Ahammed said, Every year United Nations observes World Environment Day. Air pollution not only affects our body but also our assets & properties.
There is no alternative way to avoid air pollution because we have to breathe air to live. Advanced countries pollute less because they use advanced technologies. We have to act now otherwise our next generation will suffer for severe pollution that are continuously producing now.
In his speech Mr. Muqeed Majumder Babu said, Air pollution is silent killer. It harms not only animals but also most of the humans in the country.
We can take some steps to stop air pollution like, use more environmental technologies and methods, development of environmental database, environmental education and awareness, enforcement more of rules and regulations, reduce sulfur in diesel.
In his speech Professor Dr. Atiqul Islam said, Air pollution is to blame for around 7 million deaths around the globe each year, according to a new report released by the World Health Organization (WHO).
Bangladesh has the most polluted air in the world and Dhaka is the second most polluted capital city. Plant and care for trees, stop using CFC gas, using sun energy more are some initiatives we can take to control air pollution.
Among others, Deans of different schools, Administrative heads, Directors, Faculty members, other senior officials and students were also present during this seminar.
