SC cancels Jesmine Islam’s bail

The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court yesterday scrapped the bail for Hall-Mark Group Chairman Jasmine Islam in a case involving the embezzlement of Tk Tk85.87 crore from Sonali Bank using a forged letter of credit (LC). The apex court also ordered her to surrender before the lower court concerned within four weeks in connection with the case.  The four-member bench of the Appellate Division headed by Chief Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain came up with the order after canceling her bail granted by the High Court in the case. The HC had on March 10 granted bail to Jasmine Islam in a case over embezzling Tk 85.87 crore from Janata Bank after opening a fake LC.

Later, the ACC filed a leave to appeal petition before the apex court challenging the HC order. After hearing on the petition, the apex court yesterday came up with the order. Advocate Mansurul Haque Chowdhury and Advocate Abdul Matin Khashru argued for Jasmine while Advocate Khurshid Alam Khan represented the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).
