Bangladesh opener Tamim Iqbal said that he will soon arrange a tournament after the name of his father so that talented and skilled players from Chittagong can come forward to represent for the national team. “I want to arrange a tournament after the name of my father. For it, I’ve talked with BCB president (Nazmul Hassan) Papon bhai and our Chittagong City Corporation mayor AZM Nasir Uddin for his help. I’m also talking with some company for its sponsorship. My family was involved with cricket over the years,” said Tamim Iqbal yesterday.
“I’ll give all kinds of support. I’ll form a management, who will work for me in the field level. But my first aim is to play for the national team. I’ll not make any compromise with it. It’ll not hamper my career,” Tamim told media at a signing ceremony in the capital while he inked a two-year-long deal with Goldmark Foods Limited as their brand ambassador.
After Bangladesh Test skipper Mushfiqur Rahim, they, Goldmark, have saturated Tamim with them for accelerating their growth and fame in Bangladesh’s food sector, said Mohammad Bashir, managing director of Goldmark Foods Limited.
Executive director Zahir Uddin Mahmud Khan, general manager (marketing) Monir Hossain and Priyonti’s managing director Monowar Hossain Patwari ‘among others’ were also present.
“It’s a tournament that I’ve taken the initiative, where I feel, it’ll revive the past glory of Chittagong. Once upon a time 10 players would represent the national team from Chittagong. Now it became one,” he said, adding “I think the age-level cricket is the best time for learning their basic and improving their skills. If we could arrange a good tournament for them it would be better for them. Nobody can prove their skills or mettle if they don’t get chance to play.”
The national team left-handed opener said that they are agreed to play for any team as a professional cricketer but everybody wants to perform for their own areas.
“Everybody wants to play for his district. At the end of the day, we’re all professional cricketers. We have to perform for which team we are drafted for. I’ll be very glad if I can play for Chittagong in the upcoming BPL,” Tamim opined.
“We, the icon players, will be drafted with the other players at the same day. I can’t say that it’s not enough time. After forming the team, I am sure, the team management will be strategic and think much how they can play better by this team. We’ll get the answer and which team is stronger more than others.”
“It would be better for us if we could play against the team like Australia. There was a reason for it. But that matter was not in our hand. Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) is looking after the matter. Sooner or later we’ll play against them,” Tamim said about Australia.
“We, the national team players, normally don’t get adequate opportunity to play the National (Cricket) League. We’ve already played four round games of the league. People used to complain against the standard of the league. But this year there will be no complain about it,” the south-paw said when asked about NCL.
