Solid FC of Sri Lanka began their campaign in the Sheikh Kamal International Cub Cup football tournament with winning note defeating Kolkata Mohammedan Sporting Club by 2-1 yesterday at the MA Aziz Stadium, Chittagong.
In a slow starter match, Kolkata Mohammedan controlled the early stage of the game but the Solid FC of Sri Lanka who began with counter attack strategy, gradually built up their game and also fought almost evenly. But the Kolkata Mohammedan were better to open spaces to take shot at goal.
After taking some aimless efforts and failing to score despite went closer, Taurus put the Black and White from Kolkata into lead on 38th minute when the Nigerian superbly received a header from Kunal before volleyed home over the goalkeeper (1-0).
Solid FC, the Sri Lankan champions, trailing by 0-1 bounced back strongly after resumption of play in the second half and drew level inside two minutes with Shola scored the equaliser with a beautiful solo effort on 47th minute (1-1).
Sri Lanka Solid went very closer to take lead but Shola failed to mark the target, as his effort from the box was saved by MSC goalkeeper Billal.
Mohammedan also came closer to go ahead but Sri Lankan goalkeeper with a brilliant piece of work under the bar to deny some strong attempts of Kolkata side. But neither Joy Singh nor Imran khan could push the ball into a barren post.
However, the Sri Lankan team, who looked to be afresh after the breather and fought evenly finally scored on 87th minute when Mohammedan defenders failed to clear a Punarban free kick to seal the victory (2-1).
Mohammedan although had another chance at the eleventh hour to have at least one point but the forwards disappointed failing to score from very close range.
