A total of 45 media activists and journalists conferred with the 11th Meena Media Award 2015 by UNICEF for their outstanding contribution towards promoting children’s rights in print and electronic media, reports UNB. Information Minister Hasanul Haq Inu, UNICEF’s National Goodwill Ambassador Jewel Aich and Arifa Zaman Moushumi, and UNICEF Bangladesh Deputy Representative Louise Mvono presented crests, award money and certificates to the winners through a ceremony at a city hotel. Meena is an animated cartoon character who is a change agent in her community and whose stories champion the rights of children across South Asia. The 11th award ceremony has brought children’s voices to the forefront through a cultural event and celebration of the contribution that the media has made. Speaking at the programme, UNICEF Bangladesh Deputy Representative Louise Mvono said every year this award ceremony competes with its own number of submissions as it keeps on growing by at least 100 entries each year, which clearly indicates the commitment of the media in advancing child rights. She urged the media professionals to combat social prejudices and norms such as child marriage, child labour, violence against children and inappropriate infant and child feeding practices.
