Indictment hearing in Barapukuria graft case against Khaleda June 19

A Dhaka court set June 19 to hold hearing on charge framing in Barapukuria Coalmine graft case against BNP chairperson Begum Khaleda and others. May 16, 2019 was fixed for holding hearing on the matter, but Judge AHM Ruhul Imran of Dhaka Special Judge Court-2 deferred the hearing as the prime accused is undergoing treatment at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University and jail authorities couldn’t produce her before the newly constructed court building in front of Keraniganj Central Hospital. The ACC on February 26, 2008, filed the graft case against Khaleda Zia and 15 others with Shahbagh Police Station in the capital.
They were accused of causing a loss of Tk 159 crore to the state exchequer by awarding a contract for operation of Barapukuria coalmine to a Chinese company through abuse of power. Of the 16, six have already died and their names are expected to be dropped from the case while framing of the charges.
Probe report in blogger Niloy murder case June 27

A Dhaka court yesterday set June 27 to submit probe report in the case filed over murder of blogger Niladri Chattopadhyay Niloy. Dhaka metropolitan magistrate Shahidul Islam set the new date as investigation agency detective branch (DB) of police failed to submit the report yesterday.
Miscreants hacked Niloy to death in his Goran house in the capital on August 7, 2015. Niloy’s wife Ashamoni on the same day filed a murder case with Khilgaon Police Station against four unidentified miscreants. Law enforcing agencies later arrested seven members of banned militant outfit Ansarullah Bangla Team (ABT) in connection with that incident. The seven are Mufti A Gaffar, Mortuza Foysal Sabbir, Qawsar Hossain Sarder, Kamal Hossain Sarder, Sad Al Nahid, Masum Rana and Torikul Islam. Of the seven, the last two are now on bail.
Report in graft case against former CJ Sinha July 1

A Dhaka court yesterday set July 1 for submitting probe report in the case lodged against former Chief Justice (CJ) Surendra Kumar Sinha for allegedly demanding bribe. Dhaka metropolitan magistrate Satyabrata Shikder set the new date as investigation officer in the case and director of Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) Syed Iqbal Hossain failed to submit the report yesterday.
Bangladesh National Alliance (BNA) chairman Barrister Nazmul Huda filed the case against the former chief justice on September 27, 2018, with capital’s Shahbagh Police Station. The plaintiff alleged that the then Chief Justice Sinha, being instigated, changed the verdict of a case against him in spite of the fact that the case was earlier disposed of at the High Court.
