Evict occupants from acquired land sans prior notice: JS body

The Parliamentary Standing Committee on Water Resources Ministry yesterday recommended the government to evict occupants from the lands, acquired for Dhaka city protection dams, without any prior notice, reports UNB.
It also advised the ministry to form a committee for the maintenance of the acquired lands. The parliamentary watchdog came up with the suggestions at its 15th meeting, held at the Jatiya Sangsad with its chairman Ramesh Chandra Sen, said a Parliament Secretariat handout. Discussing the need-based set-up of the Bangladesh Water Development Board,
the committee recommended finalising the
need-based set up in the intern-ministerial meeting to be held in the first week of November next.
Committee members Water Resources Minister Anisul Islam Mahmud, Muhammad Nazrul Islam, AKM Fazlul Haque, Md Faridul Haque Khan and Mustafizur Rahman Chowdhury attended the meeting.
Another report adds: The Parliamentary Standing Committee on Fisheries and Livestock Ministry yesterday recommended taking necessary steps to provide financial assistance to the families of the fishermen died of natural disasters in the coastal areas.
The committee came up with the recommendation at its 11th meeting held at Sangsad Bhaban with committee’s chairman Mir Showkat Ali Badsha in the chair.
Fisheries and Livestock Minister Muhammed Sayedul Hoque and members of the parliamentary body Kamal Ahmed Majumder, Golam Mastafa Biswas, Iftekhar Uddin Talukder Pinto, Khadaker Azizul Haque Arzu, Mohammad Altaf Ali and Samsun Nahar Begum were, among others, present at the meeting.
The meeting said the 15-day ban on hilsa catching during the peak breading season of the delicious fish has become more fruitful this year and hilsa production will go up by 25-35 percent if such drive could be implemented in the days to come.
It asked the authorities concerned to place a report at its next meeting on whether hilsa fishing ban period could be extended to 30 days from 15 days.
They also suggested the ministry to ask the curator of Dhaka Zoo to be present at the next meeting of the committee to discuss the overall scenario of the zoo.
