Idols damaged by criminals in temples

Several idols were damaged by criminals in Satkhira and Mymensingh yesterday and on Saturday, ahead of famous Durga Puja festival of the Hindu community. In Satkhira, three idols made for the upcoming Durga Puja festival were damaged by unknown criminals at a Babulia village temple in Sadar upazila early yesterday. Arabinda Mandol, president of Puja committee, said the unholy occurrence became known yesterday morning when devotees went to the temple and found three idols, including one of Durga, broken. Emdad Sheikh, officer-in-charge of Sadar police station said they are trying to arrest the culprits. Mir Modasser Hossain, Additional Superintendent of Police, said additional police forces have been deployed in the area to avert any further trouble. One man has been arrested for interrogation, he said. In Mymensingh, unknown criminals damaged three idols of Durga Puja at Madhabpur Sahabari in Tarakanda upazila on Saturday. Quoting Gouranga Saha, president of the mandap committee, police said when the workers went for sleep at around 2am, the idols were in good state; but when they came back in the morning they found the deities damaged. Police have visited the spot, said Ali Ahmed Mollah, officer-in-charge of Tarakanda police station. A complaint was lodged with Tarakanda police station yesterday, said the OC. Police drives are on to arrest the culprits, the OC added. Durga Puja is being celebrated at 48 puja mandaps in the upazila and the police have taken proper security measures to protect the mandaps, the OC added.
