Security tightened for Durga puja celebration

Khagrachhari district administration has taken strict security measures to ensure peaceful celebration of Durga puja, the biggest religious festival of Hindu community. According to sources, around 3,000 law enforcers, including police, Ansar-VDP, and volunteers will be deployed to maintain law and order.

General Secretary of Bangladesh Puja Ujjapon Parishad, Khagrachhari district unit Tarun Kumar Battachariya said members of his community aree in joyous mood to celebrate religious festival -- Durga Puja.
"Preparations for 47-Puja mandaps are almost complete in eight upazilas in Khagrachhari district,” he said.
He said the government has given cash money and rice for each mandir of the district.
Acting Deputy Commissioner Mollah Muhammad Mizanur Rahman said administration is in highest alert to ensure uninterrupted celebration of Durga Puja in 47 Hindu temples in the district.
“We have sat with Hindu leaders and concerned law enforcement agencies several times and decided to deploy the law enforcers and volunteers at every puja mandap,” he said adding executive magistrates will monitor the situation and take necessary steps if required.
Police Super Md Mazid Ali said the police in uniform and plainclothes will be put on duty at each temple in the district to make the Durga Puja to ensure safety of the devotees.
“Moreover, we will open a police control room in our office during Durga puja for 24-hour service,” he added.
In Jhenidah, at least 2,000 Ansar-VDP members will remain deployed along with the police and striking force -- Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) -- for next five days to maintain law and order in 391 temples in the district.
Additional superintendent of police Azbahar Ali Sheikh said this at a meeting with Ansar-VDP members at the Jhenidah sadar thana premises yesterday.
Sadar thana officer in charge Hasan Hafizur Rahman presided over the meeting while sadar upazila nirbahi officer Julker Niyen, assistant police super Gopinath Kanzila were present as special guests.
The meeting was told that this year, extra security measures will be taken at 391 puja mandops in Jhenidah district.
Of the puja mandops,
88 in Jhenidah sadar
upazila, 114 in Shailkupa upazila, 29 in Harinakundo upazila, 80 in Kaliganj upazila, 41 in Kotchandpur upazila and 39 in Moheshpur upazila. There were 420 puja madops last year.
