RANGPUR: A court here yesterday sentenced a man to life term rigorous imprisonment for killing his father six years back, reports BSS. Additional District and Sessions Judge of Court-2 Abu Jafar Md Kamruzzaman delivered the verdict after hearing of the case. The convicted person is Ershadul Haque alias Ershad, son of Amir Ali of village Dadon Bogra Para under Pirgachha upazila in the district. According to prosecution, Ershad hacked his father Amir Ali to death in the village on July 2 in 2009.
Amitan Nesa, daughter of the deceased, filed a murder case against her brother Ershadul Haque alias Ershad with Pirgachha Thana in this connection. Later, police arrested Ershad when he gave confessional statement before the court of the Judicial Magistrate. After investigating into the case, Pirgachha Thana police submitted charge-sheet against the only accused. Examining 15 witnesses and evidences, the court handed down the verdict. Additional Public Prosecutor of Rangpur Advocate Akhteruzzaman Polash stood for the state while senior Lawyer Advocate Basunia Ariful Haque Swapan defended the accused.
Another report adds:  Police arrested 100 persons, including 46 leaders and activists of Jamaat-Shibir, from the city and different places under all eight upazilas in the district on Saturday night, police sources said. The Jamaat-Shibir men were arrested for suspicious movements and alleged involvement with recent subversive activities like hurling petrol bombs on passenger buses, killing innocent people and other crimes.
