AL vigilant about Jamaat activities

The ruling Awami League has remained vigilant about the activities of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami that is now facing trial in the court whether the organization can be banned. The High Court had already deregistered the Islamic fundamentalist party (Jamaat) thereby banning it from participating in elections.

Earlier on Saturday, at a press conference in a city hotel, some former Jamaat leaders announced that they are going to form a new political party within a few months, with the participation of all communities. They said the new political party will not do anything based on religion.

After the announcement from the ex-Jamaat leaders, the ruling party top leaders talked over the issue. They observed that Jamaat has no moral right to do politics in the country in any form as the party top leaders had committed crimes against humanity during the Liberation War in 1971.

The AL leaders also said they have remained alert about their (Jamaat leaders) activities.

Talking to the media yesterday former minister and AL presidium member Mohammad Nasim called upon the leaders and activists of AL-led 14-party alliance as well as country’s people to remain alert about the new platform of Jamaat.

He said those who want to launch new platform of Jamaat soon, are the members of Islami Chhatra Shibir, student wing of Jamaat-e-Islami, and their past record is very bad and heinous.

“So, I want to tell the country’s people to remain alert about Jamaat leaders’ plan and activities,” he said. at the same time

AL senior leader called upon the members of law enforcement agencies to keep an close eye into their activities.

When contacted AL joint general secretary Abdur Rahman yesterday said, “As their (Jamaat leaders and activists) past record was not good. I think the new political party of Jamaat won’t bring any changes. We will closely monitoring about their activities.”

“Although there is no chance to evaluate Jamaat in any other way but if they want to do fair and non-communal politics, they can do so. But they have no right to do politics going beyond the spirit of the Liberation War,” AL leader said.

Meanwhile, AL acting general secretary Mahbubul Alam Hanif, told the media on Saturday that Jamaat has no moral right to do politics in Bangladesh, as most of its leaders committed crimes against humanity during the Liberation War in 1971.

“There is no chance for them (Jamaat leaders) to do politics in Bangladesh whatever name they give to their new party,” he added.

Speaking over the issue, AL organizing secretary Abu Sayeed Al Mahmud Swapan told The Independent that Jamaat is a platform of terrorists, the people of the country had several times witnessed the sabotage of Jamaat-Shibir leaders and activists.

“Therefore, we will have to remain alert about them. And if they try to create anarchy in the coutrny in name of forming new political party, AL leaders and workers along with countrymen will resist them,” he added.
