Growers happy over good yield, fair price of wheat

Growers in Bhola district are happy as there has been a good production of wheat and they are getting good prices this year.

During a recent visit to Ilisha union of Bhola Sadar upazila this correspondent found that farmers are busy in harvesting and thrashing wheat to sell to the traders.

Farmer Alamgir, 45, and Jakir, 50, of Char Annanda village told this correspondent that they denying prohibition of the officials of Department of Agriculture Extension some farmers cultivated wheat in their land and now they are harvesting good yield.  They said per maund of wheat is being sold at Tk 800 to 900 this season. As a result, they are getting profit this season, but they incurred huge loss during the last two years.

According to some DAE officials, it was directed by the Ministry of Agriculture not to cultivate wheat in 7 districts where wheat crops was affected by fungal diseases during the last three consecutive years as crops became totally damaged.  

Sources in the DAE, Bhola said wheat was cultivated on about 1,500 hectares of land this season in the district. But in previous years the target of wheat cultivation was about 10,000 hectares of land.  

When contacted, Binoy Krishna Devnath, deputy director of DAE, Bhola said some farmers cultivated wheat and unexpectedly achieved good production this year.
