Junaina, Jewel maintain domination in pool

Bangladesh Navy swimmer Junaina Ahmed maintained her ascendancy in the Max Group 29th National Swimming, Diving and Water Polo Championship along with Bangladesh Army swimmer Jewel Ahmed as the duo set two new more national records on day third of the four-day-meet at the Syed Nazrul Islam Swimming Complex in Mirpur yesterday.

The British-born Bangladeshi teenage natant set records in the women’s 200 meter butterfly event and 400 meter freestyle on day three after producing new records in the 400 meter individual medley and 4x200 meter freestyle relay on day two following her opening day’s scintillation in the 200 meter freestyle and 200 meter breaststroke events.

The 15-year-old ambitious swimmer clocked 02:34.14 to break the three-year-old erstwhile national record of 02:41.03 set by Rumana Akhter.

The record-making girl made her sixth national record when she scored 04:53.31 to beat the previous record of 05:07.10 set by Nazma Khantun.

Jewel Ahmed made the day’s first record in 200 meter butterfly event, where he timed 02:11.57 that pummeled the previous record of 02:12.12 set by Jewell Ahmed (2004).

Jewel showed his prowess in his pet event of 50 meter backstroke as he clocked 00:28.12 that broke his own record of 00:288:30 what he did in 2016.  

In the midst of records by Junaina Ahmed and Jewel Ahmed, Faisal Ahmed of Bangladesh Army made his national record in 400 meter freestyle by bettering his timing than Mahfizur Rahman Sagor, who created the record of 04:23.40 in 2013. Faisal clocked 04:18.25.

In male’s 4x100 meter freestyle relay, the pair of Mahfizur Rahman and Asif Reza of Bangladesh Navy broke the previous record of 03:40.52 set by Ariful Islam and Jahidul Islam with the improved timing of 03:38.45.

Bangladesh Navy continued their domination on medal tally as they claimed 20 gold medals along with 15 silver and 11 bronze medals till third day. Bangladesh Army followed them with eight gold medals coupled with 12 silver and 12 bronze medals.
