DU emerges nat’l round champ of Jessup Moot Court competition 2019

The 3rdBangladesh Qualifying Round of ‘Philip C Jessup International Law Moot Court Competition-2019’ was held at the Independent University, Bangladesh (IUB) at Bashundhara in the capital recently, says a press release. Dhaka University (DU) emerged as the new champion and Eastern University became the runner-up of the national round of Jessup Bangladesh 2019 from the 31 participating universities. There were awards given in several categories. Psymhe Wadud from Dhaka University bagged the best mooter award for her excellent performance. DU also received the best memorial award.

BRAC University and Jagannath University were respectively awarded the second best memorial and third best memorial award. North East University and Northern University were jointly recognised with the Spirit of the Jessup award. Jahangirnagar University was announced the best new team. Judges of the final round, Justice Muhammad Imman Ali, Justice Syed Refaat Ahmed and Justice Mamoon Rahman were present at the closing ceremony of the competition held at IUB on February 23.

In the closing session, the guests highly appreciated the noticeable participation of female law students in the competition and applauded the equal representation of women.

Eric Opanga, Resident Legal Advisor, US Department of Justice, OPDAT, US Embassy Dhaka, thanked all the organisers and the collaborators for their endeavor. Prof M Omar Rahman, vice-chancellor, IUB, present as chief guest and congratulated all the participants. Prof Borhan Uddin Khan, head, Department of Law, IUB and President, AsianSIL Bangladesh chaired the closing session.  

The two finalist teams of the Bangladesh qualifying round will participate in the international round of the 60th Philip C Jessup International Law Moot Court competition to be held in Washington DC.

The Jessup Moot Court Competition is one of the most renowned competitions for law students, gathering teams from more than 100 countries in the international round. The Jessup Bangladesh Competition is the national round of the international competition, which is the fifth largest qualifying round.
