100 shanties gutted in Ctg

Over 100 shanties were gutted in a devastating fire at three slums in Rail gate area of the port city on Saturday night. Three firefighting units from Chandanpur, Agrabad and Bayezid Station doused the fire at 12:30 am after several hours of frantic efforts, said Jashim Uddin, Deputy Assistant Director of Chattogram Fire Service and Civil Defence. The fire originated from an electric short circuit at Jashim’s colony around 9:45 pm and soon spread to two adjacent slums in the area, he said. The fire burned down 47 shanties at Jashim’s colony, 40 shanties at Ali Akbar Colony while 27 others at Rahim Colony. The loss incurred by the fire was estimated at around TK 25 lakhs, Fire Service sources said.
75 arrested in Khulna

District and Khulna Metropolitan Police (KMP) arrested 75 people in separate drives conducted from Saturday morning to Sunday morning. Md Anisur Rahman, additional superintendent of district police, said that police conducted drives in nine upazilas of the district and arrested 44 accused including five in drug related cases. Police also recovered 74 gram hemp. Sheikh Moniruzzaman Mithu, additional deputy commissioner of KMP, said that police, in regular drives conducted in areas under eight Police stations, also arrested 31 accused including 13 in those of drugs. They also recovered 122 Yaba tablets, 20gram hemp and two litre liquor.
Speaker visits mazars in Sylhet

Speaker Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury on Saturday visited the mazars (shrines) of Hazrat Shahjalal and Hazrat Shah Paran. She went to Hazrat Shahjalal’s shrine in the city around 3pm and offered special prayers. Later, she visited the mazar of Hazrat Shah Paran on the outskirts of the city. She offered Fateha there. The Speaker reached Sylhet around 1:20pm. She was greeted by local Awami League leaders, including its district unit President Lutfur Rahman and Secretary Shafiqur Rahman. Security was ratcheted up ahead of the Speaker’s visit, said Sylhet Metropolitan Police Additional Deputy Commissioner (Media) Md Jedan Al Musa.
