AL leader stabbed dead in Pabna

UNB, Pabna

A local leader of Awami League was stabbed to death allegedly by miscreants at Char Shibrampur in Sadar upazila on Thursday.

The deceased was identified as Khairul Islam, 42, convener of ward no 9 Hemayetpur union Awami League and son of Saber Ali.

Quoting family members, police said some unidentified miscreants swooped on Khairul when he went to the sluice gate area for catching fish in the evening and stabbed him indiscriminately, leaving him critically injured.

Later, he was taken to Pabna General Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries around 9 pm, said Obaidul Haque, officer-in-charge of Sadar Police Station.

Police suspected that miscreants might have killed him over previous enmity.

Road crash kills 2 of a family

UNB, Gopalganj

A woman and her mother-in-law were killed in a collision between a motorcycle and human hauler at Devgram in Kotalipara upazila yesterday morning.

The deceased was identified as Mansura Begum, 20, wife of Nayeem Mollah and her mother-in-law Murshida Begum, 55, hailing from Bhuturia village in Mollahat upazila of Bagerhat district.

Md Kamrul Faruk, officer-in-charge of Kotalipara Police Station, said Nayeem along with his wife and mother was going to his father-in-law’s house in Bagerhat.

The accident took place when a human hauler collided with the motorbike carrying them around 11:30 am, leaving the duo dead on the spot and Nayeem critically injured.

On information, police sent the bodies to Gopalganj General Hospital morgue for autopsy while Nayeem was taken to Khulna Medical College Hospital for treatment, the OC added.

‘Naria soil not be let for erosion’

BSS, Shariatpur

Deputy Minister for Water Resources Enamul Haque Shamim yesterday vowed not to let even a single inch of soil at Naria to be eroded at the mighty River Padma saying Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will do whatever necessary in this regard.

“Sheikh Hasina is the mother of humanity. She has devoted her life for ensuring welfare of common people… We’ll not let even a single inch of soil to be eroded at the Mighty River Padma,” he said.

The deputy minister said this while witnessing the progress of protection works of Right Embankment of the River at the Naria-Janzira portion under the project at Mulfatganj Bazar here this morning.

He also informed that around 18-20 lakh Geo bags would be put by this April at the protection work on the right embankment of the River Padma under Naria and Janzira areas to fulfill the target.

Earlier, around 2,700 Geo bags were put in this area but after the day’s visit, around 16,000 bags are being put here while dredger machines would begin work here within the next few days, Shamim said.

Govt efforts lauded for dev of people with disability

BSS, Rangpur

Speakers at a discussion lauded the comprehensive steps taken by the government for ensuring inclusive development of the physically-challenged people.

Rangpur Badhir Sangha (RBS) with district administration and Department of Social Services (DSS) organised the discussion at Sumi Community Centre here on Thursday afternoon in observance of the Bangla Sign Language Day-2019.

Earlier, a rally, participated by physically challenged, hearing impaired and intellectually disabled people, students, guardians, teachers, officials of different organisations and civil society members, was brought out on the city streets.

Divisional Director of the DSS Anil Chandra Barman addressed the discussion followed by and distribution of blankets among the poor and distressed people with disabilities as the chief guest.
