The ‘anti-VC teachers’ group’ bagged 10 posts out of 15 in the Jahangirnagar University Teachers’ Association (JUTA) election held on the campus yesterday. A faction of Awami League teachers’ group, BNP, and left-leading teachers’ alliance under the banner of ‘Sammilita Shikkak Samaj’ took part in the election against VC-backed Pro Awami League teachers’ group under the banner of ‘Bangabandhur Adarsher Shikkhak Parishad’.
Prof Ajit Kumar Majumder of statistics department and Prof Md Sohel Rana of pharmacy department were elected as president and general secretary respectively. Prof Majumder took part in the election from a faction of AL-backed teachers’ organisation ‘Bangabandhur Adarsha O Muktijuddher Chetanay Bishwashi Pragatishil Shikkhak Samaj’ while Prof Md Shohel Rana from the BNP teachers’ faction.
Prof Jugal Krishna Das of computer science and engineering and Assistant Professor Laizu Nasrin of english department were elected as vice-president and joint secretary respectively. Prof Monwar Hossain Tuhin of Zoology department was elected as Treasurer. Leader of Sammilita Shikkhak Samaj JU Pro-VC Prof Amir Hussain said It was the expected result of the election as the incumbent VC Prof Farzana Islam did not able to attain faith of maximum teachers for her some controversial activities.
