Police blood bank caters to the need of thousands

With the slogan “We build ties with blood, we will donate blood throughout the life’, the journey of Police Blood Bank started nearly seven years ago. In the last few years thousands of people have spontaneously donated blood in this blood bank.

The Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) started the Police Blood Bank on December 12, 2012 as part of social responsibility. Since its inception, the blood bank has garnered attention of not only the member of the police forces but also the attention of common people who have been donating blood there in the past few years.

The founder of this bank is Habibur Rahman, the incumbent Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of police headquarters. He has contributed a lot for establishing this novel institution. When he founded the bank, he was posted as the Deputy Commissioner of the DMP Headquarters.

According to Habibur Rahman, there are over 40,000 police officials in the city. None of the hospitals in the city are sufficient in blood collection. So if such a large number of police officials start donating blood, then it would reduce the shortage of blood in the banks, Habibur thought.

With such idea in the mind, he founded the bank. “Anyone can donate blood here,” he said.

The blood bank is located at the central police hospital in Rajarbagh. The blood storing system is done with the state of the art technology there, so the quality of the blood remains intact, Habibur said adding that the blood from the bank is being supplied at different parts of the country.

“The persons who donate blood here are given a donor registration card. They are given preference in times of their need,” said Habibur.
