The US Embassy including the Consular Section and the American Centre with the Archer K Blood American Centre Library and the Education USA Student Advising Centre will be closed on October 11, on the occasion of Columbus Day, an American holiday, a press release said yesterday.

2 food shops fined
Two fast food shops owners were fined Tk 18,000 on charge of selling unhygienic and substandard foods to the customers in Rajshahi city on Wednesday, officials concerned said yesterday.
A team of Department of National Consumer Rights Protection (DNCRP) conducted raid in Bhatapara and Shalbagan markets and found Adibhut Fast Food and Razia Chinese and Community Centre and fined the food shop for preparing, possessing and selling foods in unhygienic condition. Subsequently, the team fined Tk 6,000 and Tk 12,000 against the shop owners respectively and realized the fined money instantly. Saiful Islam, assistant director of DNCRP, said such drive against the violations of consumers’ rights will be continued during the days ahead.
Jamaat leader held in Barisal
Police arrested Barisal Kazirhat thana unit general secretary of Jamaat-e-Islami Ohaidul Sharif, 40, from his Charsonapur village home yesterday morning on charge of carrying subversive activities.
MR Showkat Anwar, officer-in-charge of Kazirhat thana, said Jamaat leader Ohaidul Sharif held several secret meetings in different areas of Kazirhat thana recently to carryout subversive activities. A number of cases have been pending with Kazirhat thana against him, the OC added.
Man electrocuted in Sylhet
A young man died from electrocution at Haraitrilochan village of Sylhet district on Wednesday.
The deceased was Abul Hossain, 25, son of late Moiab Ali of the village. Witnesses said Abul sustained injuries when he came in contact with a live electric wire while he was playing in a field in the area in the morning. Locals rushed Abul to Jakiganj upazila health complex where attending doctors declared him dead.
20 injured in road accident
At least 20 people were injured in a road accident on Barisal-Dhaka highway in Shoymail area of Barisal city yesterday. Police and local source said a bus ‘Mim Paribahan’ left Khulna for Barisal yesterday morning. The accident took place when the driver of the bus lost control over the steering and fell into a roadside ditch in Shoymail area under Airport police station of the city. Local people and police rushed to the spot and rescued the injured passengers.
