Safe environment sought for girl children

Speakers at a discussion yesterday urged the government to ensure a safe and congenial environment in the country for brining up girl children, reports UNB. They made the call at a discussion organised by Bangladesh National Woman Lawyers’ Association (BNWLA) at the National Press Club, marking the International Day of the Girl Child, 2015. Chaired by BNWLA’s Executive Director Advocate Salma Ali, the programme was addressed, among others, Bangladesh Shishu Academy Chairperson eminent litterateur Selina Hossain and actress Rokeya Prachi.
Selina Hossain said, “Talents, qualifications and qualities can differ from person to person, and all can’t be equal, but education, health, and security are everyone’s right which the government must ensure for the girl children.”
She urged law enforcers to work hard to protect girls and women from any sort of sexual and social abuse and stand beside the victims of any kind of repression, including rape.
Urging parents not to differentiate male and female children in the family, Selina Hossain stressed ensuring education to girl children for national development. Salma Ali urged the government not to set the minimum age for marriage for women under 16, and called for ensuring the speedy trial of the killing and repression cases of women and children.
