Doctors call off strike

Doctors from Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital (SBMCH) yesterday called off their strike at 11:30amfollowing arrest of the three attendants who attacked two on-duty interns and assaulted an on-duty nurse, alleging that their negligence had caused a patient’s death. Doctors called the strike at about 9:30am after the trio claimed that one Rina Begum (28), who was admitted to SBMCH October 6 evening, died due to lack of proper treatment, pointing fingers at interns Dr. Md Mahiyan and Dr. Shihab Ahmed and attacking on-duty nurse Momotaz Begum for the same.
According to SBMCH sources, Rina, a homemaker, was admitted October 6 evening with an infection. She had been surgically operated the same morning by doctors at a local private clinic in Vandaria Upozila, Pirojpur district. However, her condition deteriorated post the operation and she was admitted to the Surgical Ward of SBMCH. Rina died at around 6:45am today. The attendants then started claiming that Rina had died due to absence of proper treatment. Flinging accusations at Dr. Mahiyan and Dr. Shihab, they even attacked Momotaz at one point. After getting to know about this, other doctors rushed to the spot and caught the three attendants, locking them in a room, thereafter calling strike.  Hospital authorities and the police came to the rescue and arrested the trio. The strike was later called off however during the period of the strike, even emergency treatment of patients was abandoned, causing many to suffer badly. Head of the Surgery Department, Dr. A.F.S.M. Sarfuzaman Rubel, said the authorities would file a case against the attendants in this regard.
