appointed Queen’s Counsel

Bangladesh-born barrister in the United Kingdom (UK), Mozammel Hossain, has been appointed as the Queen’s Counsel (QC). Hossain will be sworn in at a ceremony at the Westminster Hall at the Houses of Parliament on 11th March. He is the first criminal barrister of Bangladeshi origin who is set to be the QC. The two other Bangladesh-origin QCs are Ajmamul Hossain and Sir Akhlaq Choudhury. Hossain is the youngest of the barristers and the second youngest QC of this year in the UK.

Hossain, born in Mollar Howla village under Barishal sadar upazila, completed his HSC from Dhaka College and got admission at the Law Faculty of Dhaka University. Completing a year in Dhaka, he left for the UK to complete his LLB from the University of Liverpool. Earlier, he was the first overseas student to become the president of the Students’ Union of the Inns of Court School of Law (ICSL). During 2000-2001, he was a governor of ICSL as well.

Hossain is famous for his exceptional articulacy in the courtroom and been involved in some of the most high profile criminal cases in UK. He has been described by the immediate past Lord Chief Justice of England and Wales, the Lord Thomas, as ‘an advocate of great eloquence’.

His notable contribution in terrorism cases are: Operation  Gospodar (2017), Operation Yiges (2016), Operation Guildship (2014), Operation Movie (2013), Re CD (2013), R v I and Ors (2010) (the ‘Blackburn Resistance’ case) among others. One of his elder brothers is a consultant surgeon in the UK, while another is a chartered accountant in Bangladesh. His eldest brother Mokbul Hossain was a freedom fighter.
