Cop arrested over robbery

Sub-inspector of Mirzapur Police Station and four others were arrested yesterday over claims of robbery at a house at Gorama village in Mirzapur upazila.

Officer-in-Charge (Investigation) of Mirzapur Police Station Mosarraf Hossain said seven to eight young men led by Sub-inspector of Mirzapur Police Station Sohel Kuddus, who was dressed in plain clothes, knocked on the door of Almas Mia at Gorama village at about 2am. As Almas inquired about their identity, Sohel identified them as police. Local people rushed and captured five of them as he shouted for help. Two others of the gang managed to flee from the scene.

The four aresstees are Shahidur Rahman, Saidul Islam, of Rangpur, Anwer Hossain and Firoj Mia of Tangail district.

AKM Mizanul Haque, officer-in-charge of Mirzapur Police Station, said departmental actions will be taken against the SI if he is found guilty.

BSF returns Bangladeshi national’s body

Indian Border Security Force (BSF) on Saturday evening returned the body of a Bangladeshi national who was shot dead along Dharmagarh border in Ranishankail upazila early Friday.

The deceased was identified as Jahangir Alam Raju, 21, son of Badsha Mia of Shahanabad village in the upazila.

Jahangir was shot dead by BSF while he along with a group of Bangladeshi was standing near the pillar no. 374/2 around 4 am Friday, said BGB Thakurgaon 50 Battalion Captain Lt Colonel Tuhin Md Masud.

Jahangir died on the spot while the others managed to flee, he said.

He also said a BGB-BSF flag meeting was held at the battalion commander level on Saturday.

After the flag meeting led by the 171 BGB Commander Subedar Ibrahim and the Company Commander of BSF Pran Kumar, the formalities for handing over the body were completed.

Sub-inspector Mahato of Goalpukur Police Station in India handed over the body to Ranishankail Assistant Commissioner (land) Kumar Saha and Sub-inspector of Ranishankail Police Station Azahar Ali around 7 pm.

21 return home after serving jail in Indian prison

Twenty one Bangladeshi nationals returned home yesterday after serving different jail terms in Indian prison.

The Indian Border Security Force (BSF) and Assam Police handed over the Bangladeshi nationals to the members of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) at No Man's Land along Sheula Land Port in Bianibazar upazila around 4:30 pm.

BGB sources said all the arrestees, hailing from different parts of the country, were detained by law enforcers of India from separate places and awarded different jail sentence. After completion of their jail term, the Indian government took necessary steps to send them back to the country.

Oboni Shanker, officer-in-charge of Beanibazar Police Station, said among them, 15 were handed over to their respective family members while the rest six are now under police custody.

Man hacked dead in Pabna

A man was hacked to death allegedly by his rivals at Sripur Bazar in Santhia upazila on Saturday night.

The deceased was identified as Hafiz Miah, 42, son of Abu Taher Miah of Raghurampur village in Laxmipur union of Atghoria upazila, and was a regional leader of Purbangla Communist Party (Lal Pataka).

Moniruzzaman Miah, officer-in-charge of Ataikula Police Station, said that there had been a long standing dispute between Hafiz Miah and Sabbir, 40, a resident of the same village. Sequel to the enmity, Hafiz locked into an altercation with Sabbir on Saturday afternoon and slapped him. Later, Sabbir along with his fellow swooped on Hafiz around 9:30pm and hacked him with a sharp weapon. Being rescued by locals, the injured was taken to Pabna General Hospital where doctors declared him dead.
