Medical safety refers to the safety regarding medical devices, diseases, and health care of patients. In other words, medical safety is defined as the prevention of harm to patients, healthcare providers and other stakeholders. Experts consider medical safety as indistinguishable for the quality of health care.

Unfortunately in Bangladesh the media tends to report mostly on specific heath-related crises and meaningful debate around the causes of lack of medical safety in general is negligible. Another thing which is an obstacle to ensuring medical safety is that Bangladeshis have to rely heavily on private healthcare, which they avail primarily through out-of-pocket payments. This is in stark contrast not only to the developed West, but also to developing countries such as Thailand and Sri Lanka.

Health services need to be committed to providing a safe and secure environment for patients, staff and visitors. Hospital security arrangements keep them safe from inappropriate behaviour such as violence and aggression. Likewise, medical devices are an essential part of patient care, but if a defective or unsafe device enters widespread use it can have severe consequences. Drug safety (also known as pharmacovigilance), is the science of detection, assessment, understanding and prevention of side effects which allows us to understand more about the risks and benefits of a medicine. Patient safety is the cornerstone of high-quality health care where mortality and morbidity come forward. In our medical colleges, hospitals and clinics medical safety must be prioritised.
